“My father sold cherry to the middleman. It took me nine years to put my own name on the bag.”
Ricardo took over his father's farm in 2014, when leaf rust had wiped out two thirds of the sierra's production and half his neighbors had already switched out of coffee.
He replanted with Bourbon and Typica instead of rust-resistant varieties, betting that specialty prices would cover the risk. He started processing in his own patio in 2018. Today he sells four lots separated by altitude and is the technical reference for half a dozen neighboring farms.
His Geisha is forty trees planted in 2019 on the highest block, more experiment than business. 2027 is the first harvest with enough volume to send to the city.
